Are you paying attention to the quality of air inside your office or home? We spend more than 90% of our time indoors, yet we tend to only focus on outdoor air quality when the air inside your home and office is likely two to five times worse than outside!
Why is indoor air worse than outdoor air?
First, windows are generally closed, so we are circulating the same air, dust, skin cells, mites and pollution repeatedly throughout our homes. Second, our homes and offices are filled with chemicals. Chemicals in your home can come from many different sources, including laundry soaps, air deodorizers, hair sprays, fragrances, cleaning products, and so much more.
Chemicals found in the average household
Volatile Organic Compounds (VOSs)
VOSs cause eye, nose, and throat irritation, headaches, loss of coordination, and nausea. They may also cause damage to the liver, kidneys, and central nervous system depending on exposure amounts.
Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDEs)
PBDEs are toxic to both the environment and the humans living in the environment.
Perfluorinated Compounds (PFCs)
These may cause birth defects and cancer.
Perchloroethylene (PCE)
PCE can cause dizziness and unconsciousness. Long-term exposure can cause liver and kidney damage, memory loss, confusion, and cancer. It has been banned in Canada and Europe for this reason.
Triclosan
This alters hormone regulation
Chloride and Ammonia
Long-term exposure to these two chemicals can result in lung disease, irritation to skin, eyes, throat, and lungs.
If you are like most people, you are inhaling these chemicals day in and day out, as well as at night when you are sleeping.
Your home’s air is likely a chemical stew and you do not even realize it!
