Did you know there are harmful chemicals in things like hair care products, skin products, makeup, fingernail products, and just about anything you apply on your body?
Many people tend to overlook chemicals in things like lotions and makeup because we believe the companies making them won’t use harmful ingredients especially because they are going on our bodies. Sadly, this couldn’t be further from the truth.
Chances are, some of your favorite beauty products are riddled with harmful chemicals. You inhale all these chemicals every time you use these products. Worse yet, they are absorbed in your skin.
And you wonder why you feel so tired and sluggish all of the time!
Here are just a few very common chemicals and reasons you should avoid them:
1. Parabens– commonly found in makeup, moisturizers, shampoos, etc.
Why avoid: Parabens interfere with hormone production and have even been linked to breast cancer.
2. DEA, cocamide DEA and lauramide DEA, MEA and TEA— often found in creamy and foaming products such as shampoos, cleansers, conditioners, and moisturizers.
Why avoid: These chemicals can react to form cancer-causing nitrosamines. They are also very harmful to fish and wildlife.
3. Dibutyl Phthalate or DBP— found in nail products and hair sprays.
Why avoid: DBP is toxic to reproduction and has been known to interfere with hormone function. This is also harmful to fish and wildlife.
4. BHA (butylated hydroxyanisole) and BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene)— commonly found in moisturizers and makeup products.
Why avoid: These chemicals are thought to be linked to cancer and hormone function interference.
5. Coal Tar Dyes (P-Phenylenediamine)— found in hair dyes and colors identified as ‘C.I’ followed by five digets.
Why avoid: These dyes can cause cancer and even send heavy metals into the brain! OUCH!
6. PEGs (polyethylene glycols)— these petroleum-based compounds are found in moisturizers, deodorants, conditioners, etc.
Why avoid: These compounds can be contaminated with 1, 4-dioxane, which can cause cancer.
7. Fomaldehyde-Releasing Preservatives (Dmdm Hydantoin, Diazolidinyl Urea, Imidazolidinyl Urea, Methenamine, or Quarternium-15)— often found in hair products.
Why avoid: These preservatives are thought to be linked to cancer. Fun fact: formaldehyde is used to embalm dead bodies… think about that
8. Synthetic fragrances and Parfum— WARNING: these are even used in products marketed as “unscented”!
Why avoid: the mixture of chemicals in perfumes can trigger allergies and asthma, as well as being linked to cancer and neurotoxicity. They are also harmful to fish and wildlife.
The above list has just begun to scratch the surface of toxic chemicals that are found in your favorite bathroom products. A common misconception that I hear quite frequently is that our bodies get rid of these chemicals naturally and we don’t need to worry about it. This is a myth!
Our bodies defend themselves by storing many of these chemicals inside fat cells until something inevitably dislodges them, causing problems for your body like cancer or other things I mentioned above.
So what’s the solution?
Buy organic products that pride themselves on NOT using any of these dangerous chemicals. You can find these products in organic grocery stores and online

I love the Contant, but it’s a lot of information to remember if I’m going to watch out for these days I have to figure out a way to remember some of the items I need to watch out for
I totally understand. I recommend try jotting them down on a sticky note or just remember a few at a time. Working with a coach can help navigate through it all. Good Luck to you.
