Have you ever felt like the activities you once loved doing are now beyond your reach? Maybe you are feeling stagnant and stiff, or you have no energy and you have gained a few extra pounds. If this sounds like you, you are not alone. Physical wellness is a huge component of overall well-being, no matter what your age!
As we age, assessing physical wellness becomes more important. Let’s face facts—the body you used to have is not the same body you have today. Believe me; I know exactly how that feels, but do you want that to stop you from doing the things you love? It doesn’t have to!
Assessing your physical wellness is the first step. Here are four (4 ) action items to assess:
1. How many times per week do you exercise? ______
Tip: Three times a week is a minimum to get good sleep—at least once per day is optimal.
2. What does your diet consist of? ______
Tip: The more fruits and veggies, the better! Try to get the bulk of your protein intake during breakfast and lunch, since protein in the evening can keep you awake. Limit your sugar intake as much as possible.
3. How many hours of sleep do you get? ______
Tip: The optimal amount can vary from person to person, based on physical activity, wellness, age and so forth. It is best to get sleep as early as possible and sleep until you wake up naturally, without an alarm clock.
4. Are you in chronic pain? ______
Tip: Pain of any kind can make sleep especially difficult. If the pain is treatable with a topical lotion such as Arnica, use it just before bedtime. If the pain is internal, you will want to talk to your doctor about proper pain management.
You CAN achieve optimal physical wellness, no matter what your age! Understanding your body and its relationship to nutrition and physical activity is crucial. As we have discussed, it involves eating well and building strength, flexibility, and endurance in safe ways. It is also about taking responsibility for your health, paying attention to your body’s warning signs and seeking medical help when necessary.
