Achieving financial wellness is as simple as taking the first step. Notice – I didn’t say easy. When your financial wellness is in balance and intact, your other wellness components have the capacity to also thrive. It’s time to take that first step towards financial wellness so you can live the life you have always wanted.
Where do I start?
First, take a look at your finances and create a budget sheet. I have attached an easy to use budget sheet to this post to help get you started. Review your spending habits and prepare to get your financial wellness intact. Do not live above your means, and start saving. Having an established emergency savings fund is crucial when it comes to financial well-being. With those funds in place, you won’t have to stress next time you wake up with a flooded basement or a sick pet.

Determine needs vs. wants.
When you are creating your budget, outline the necessities. You will find that there are items in your budget that you absolutely can’t live without (electricity, water, food), and items you can live without (cable, Netflix, Starbucks). I’m not saying you have to cut these things out forever, but while you are eliminating debt it is a good idea. Don’t disregard the things you want from your budget either. If you are dreaming of a trip to Paris with your significant other, start saving for it. You don’t have to put your entire life on hold. Achieving financial wellness should be just that, wellness.
Try making more money.
There are so many things you can do to increase your income. Just to name a few:
- Ask for a raise
- Secure a better paying job
- Obtain a part time job
- Become a virtual assistant
- Start a blog and promote affiliate products
- Do odd jobs for people
- Sell items you no longer need on Ebay or Craigslist
- Become a driver for Uber, Lyft or Sidecar
Get organized.
This is a crucial step towards financial wellness. Here are a few ways to get organized:
- Avoid racking up late fees – Make a schedule of when your bills are due. Set reminders, write sticky-notes, whatever you need to do.
- Set your budget, and stick to it.
- Create a cash system – Only shop with cash at grocery stores to reduce over-spending.
- Pay yourself first – Set aside 10% of each paycheck for your savings. It will add up quick.
Start saving. Today. Right now. Get ready to take financial action! I have attached budget worksheet to this post to help get you started. Don’t wait another day to take action towards financial wellness.
