Nutrition is a very important part of physical wellness. It provides us with the fuel we need to engage in the game of life. There is one aspect of physical health that we often overlook, however, and that is gut health!
The body’s gut is often referred to as “your body’s second brain”, and that’s because digestion, mood, health, and even the way we think can be linked to our gut health. You may be asking “How do I achieve good gut health?”, and it’s easier than you might think! Simply put, you need the proper amount of “good bacteria” and a balanced diet.
Warning signs of an unhealthy gut:
- Digestive issues like bloating, gas or diarrhea.
- Sugar cravings.
- Bad breath.
- Food allergies or sensitivities.
- Moodiness, Anxiety and Depression.
- Skin problems, like eczema.
- Autoimmune disease and suppressed immunity.
Five tips to help you restore and maintain your gut health:
- Take a high-quality probiotic.
Probiotics are live microorganisms promote a healthy digestive tract (your gut!) and a healthy immune system. These are also commonly known as friendly, good, or healthy bacteria.
- Incorporate fermented foods into your diet.
Just like probiotics, fermented foods can help introduce good bacteria to your gut. Some foods known for promoting gut health include:
- Sauerkraut
- Yogurt
- Kefir
- Kimchi
- Tempeh
- Kombucha
- Eat less refined sugar and processed foods.
Among the many issues caused by refined sugar and processed foods (inflammation, weight gain, hormonal imbalance…), it also promotes the growth of bad bacteria and upsets gut flora balance.
- Eat more plants and dietary fiber.
By eating more plants, we achieve and maintain microbiota diversity — which is going to lead to a clearer mind and happier disposition. Consuming plenty of leafy greens will not only keep our intestinal lining intact, but it will also help us cultivate a more varied collection of bacteria, which is crucial to good gut health.
- Take steps to manage stress.
The existence of the brain/gut connection makes it clear that stress can be linked to gut health. When stressed, your brain sends messages to your gut in the form of chemicals, which affects how well your gut works. The less stressed you are, the more efficient your body will be.
