“It is not good for man to be alone”
Genesis 2:18, 22
Many people may not have considered social wellness as an important facet of wellness. Social wellness is about building deeper bonds with family, co-workers and friends, as well as choosing whom you want in your inner circle. When you are being social, you are out mixing and mingling with people laughing and having fun. Laughter is a great way to loose belly fat. We were not created to be isolated on an island or sitting alone at home all of the time.
Research shows, when people are incarcerated, the isolation has significant negative effects on their mental well-being which leads to psychotic breakdowns. A study completed by the University of Chicago found that at any given time, at least one out of every five persons—or roughly 60 million Americans suffer from loneliness. My goal is to make sure you aren’t one of them. There are a lot of things you can do to enhance your social wellness, so if you feel that yours is lacking, it doesn’t have to be permanent. As humans, we were made and created to socialize. God made Eve for Adam. Social wellness is not only beneficial to our overall well-being, it’s crucial.
The affects of social wellness deficiency
Isolation becomes detrimental to your health, as it can lead to depression and can alter your sense of reality. This can be directly witnessed when you look at prisoners. Some prisoners have psychological issues from being isolated over extended periods of time. Depending on how long they are reprimanded into isolation, they may experience some psychotic mishaps. This reason alone is why “halfway houses” are so important for the reintegration of prisoners into the outside world. Having spent so much time in isolation, they now have to be re-socialized and re-taught how to act in the “real world”.
Are you socially well? Ask yourself these three questions:
2. Do you at least get away every now-and-then on some weekends?
If not, you might want to start. If money is tight, consider taking “stay-cations” where you explore your own community while staying in your home.
3. Are you involved in social activities and clubs?
If not, review the newspaper for what’s happening locally. Join Meetup and search for groups in your area. If you belong to a church, find out what activities they have going on.
